2001-12-17 to 2001-12-20Many people with HIV or at risk of infection suffer discrimination, intolerance and prejudice. Creating an environment in which their human rights are respected will both help them live a life of dignity and reduce the numbers of people vulnerable to infection. Indeed, the past 20 years have shown us that public health and human rights are complementary, not conflicting, goals. We need to harness the power of humanity within each of us to create societies of compassion and understanding. In countries throughout the world, community-based organizations and civil society groups have been at the forefront of the response to AIDS. It is time for scaling up preventive, support and care activities and enhance synergistic actions. We hope this Conference will help us maximize the commitment, leadership, participation, capacity and experiences of our communities and our leaders to bring this power of humanity to the challenge of the HIV/AIDS epidemic
