Monitoring the Millennium Development Goals in southern Africa - Assessing evidence, capacity and partnerships


2006-11-27 to 2006-11-28

The Southern African Regional Poverty Network(SARPN) and the Open Society Institute of Southern Africa will be hosting a two day southern Africa regional workshop at the Sunnyside Park Hotel, Johannesburg , South Africa.

The aim of the regional workshop is to contribute towards enhancing implementation of efficient, effective and consistent mechanisms for monitoring progress towards the achievement of the MDGs and other international commitments. Specific objectives to be achieved by the event will be:

  • Understanding and sharing current MDGs monitoring practices and systems in the region.
  • Identifying capacity gaps of stakeholders regarding the monitoring of MDGs.
  • Identify strategic priority areas and actions for developing the capacity for stakeholders to effectively monitor the MDGs and other commitments.
  • Identify opportunities and strategies for enhancing knowledge and information sharing.

The workshop is targeted at policy makers, policy actors and developmental practitioners drawn from national and regional civil society organizations, NGOs and INGOs working on MDGs.

The event will result in the production of a background paper, workshop report and briefs on specific issues drawn from the seminar.
