Antoinette has a background in Health Promotion. She worked at District, Regional and National level in the British NHS. She came to South Africa in 1994 and worked for Soul City before joining the Health Systems Trust in 1997.

Media and Advocacy Officer

Ashnie joined the HST in 2003. She is based in the Equity Gauge Project and focuses on analyzing health systems issues from an equity perspective. She is also responsible for co-coordinating the media and advocacy initiatives of the organization.

Bridget has a background in nursing and community and public health. She has worked on local, national and international health projects (CHW projects, programme planning & design, management, human resources for health, global health). She is currently co-ordinating the Global Health Watch - an alternate world health report initiated by GEGA, People's Health Movement and Medact and released every two years.

Candy is a pharmacist with a Masters in Clinical Pharmacology and some post-grad training in Medical Informatics. She has been involved with developing electronic information resources for public health and is now working primarily with health statistics and indicators for the South African Health Review and the District Health Barometer.

Chief Financial Officer

Deena is a BCom graduate and the Financial Manager at HST. He completed his articles with a firm of Chartered Accountants. Deena has also worked in the service, retail and manufacturing industries specialising in the accounting and auditing fields.

Dudu is the receptionist at HST. She started working for HST on a part-time basis, assisting with the packing and posting of Update and other publications. She joined HST as General Assistant in 2002.

Elizabeth is a Public Health Medicine specialist and joins the research team as a Senior Researcher. She has an MBChB (University of Cape Town), a Certificate in Medicine and Law (UNISA, University of Pretoria), a Masters in Public Health (University of the Witwatersrand), a Masters in Epidemiology (LSHTM) (cum laude) and is also a Fellow of the College of Public Health Medicine (SA).

Senior Administrative Officer

Farana has been appointed as the Senior Administrative Officer in the Durban office of Health Systems Trust. She provides administrative support to the HealthLink, ISDS and Research programmes.Before joining the HST Farana worked at the University of Durban-Westville as an administrator. She holds a National as well and National Higher Diploma in Office Management.

Fazila was employed to provide financial and accounting technical support required in the Finance section for the implementation of various tasks and procedures for the HST, its programmes and support sections. Her competencies and skills include financial analysis, computer and accounting skills, and payroll preparation.

Fiorenza is a pharmacist by profession and currently manages the District Health Barometer project. She also writes, edits, coordinates, produces and publishes both electronic and hard copy information and publications for HST.

Halima Hoosen-Preston - halima @ hst.org.za.
Webmaster and Information Officer

Halima is an information officer and web designer at HST since 1996. She has experience in web, graphic and layout design and has been involved in designing and maintaining the HST web site and web sites hosted by HST. She has also been involved in training of personnel at district and provincial level. Her main interests are graphic and internet design. Her qualifications are in web authoring, design and business management.

Facilitator: Governance and Equity Projet

Hlengiwe has a B Soc Sc Honours in International Relations and Public Policy. She is currently working on the Governance and Equity Projet (GEP) as Facilitator. The project seeks to strengthen community participation in the provision of health services. It will do this through the promotion of Clinic Committees, (CCs)and District Health Council and Councilors (DHCs).

Imeraan Cassiem - imeraan @ hst.org.za.
HMIS: Provincial Facilitator for the Northern Cape Province

Imeraan has more than sixteen years of experience working in the Western Cape Health Department. He worked for ten years at facility level (Somerset Hospital) and six and a half years in the Information Management Unit at Provincial level. He has experience and knowledge in both Hospital and Primary Health Care Information and a bit of GIS. Imeraan holds a Human Resource Management qualification and still also remain passionate about that.

Director: Research Programme

Irwin's previous experience includes being Medical Director of The Valley Trust, Project Leader of Natal Institute for Community Health Education, National Director of National Progressive Primary Health Care Network, and most recently a Public Health Physician in independent practice. His current areas of interest in health development remain broad. They include evidence-based action research to improve access, equity and quality in the PHC & district health system, macro-economics, poverty alleviation, public works, participatory human resource development, community participation, CHWs, men's involvement in health and of course the myriad ramifications of HIV/AIDS, our most recent adversary.

Data Manager: District Development and PHC cluster at NDoH

Jackie has a background in Nursing, Health Information Management and Strategic Planning and M & E in the District Health System. She is currently provides data management support to NDoH PHC and District Development Cluster by managing DHIS software at advance user level, preparing data for quarterly, annual and ad hoc reports, facilitating and managing changes to data elements, and providing support in the development of training programs and material.

Jaine Roberts - jaine @ hst.org.za.
Deputy Director: Research Programme

Jaine has a Masters in Development Studies with her thesis on the failure of the detection of asbestos-related disease, and consequent social exclusion that has resulted, in Limpopo Province. She has had public health research experience having worked at HEARD, and more recently as the Project Manager of the Industrial Health Unit at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, University of Natal. She has also lectured in the sociology of health. Jaine is particularly interested in occupational and environmental health, and has been actively involved in advocacy work around the asbestos-related disease litigation that has been in the news. Prior to her involvement in health, she was based in Johannesburg where she worked for the Los Angeles Times for 8 years. She has also worked in documentary film for a variety of international public broadcasters.

Jonathan is the technical support/internet developer at HST. He was the System Administrator of the College of Optometrists in London from 1999. His previous jobs included working as a programmer, an officer in the British Army, and a caterer.

Josianne Roma Reardon - josianne @ hst.org.za.
Project Manager: Knowledge Management

Josianne is part of the HealthLink team as the Project Manager for Knowledge Management. She is primarily responsible for managing and disseminating information, including the South African Health Review. She has a Ph.D. in Population Health, a Masters in Human Kinetics and a B.Sc. in Human Kinetics from the University of Ottawa (Canada).

Joyce assists with the development and maintenance of administrative systems and ensure their functionality so as to meet the needs of the Initiative for Sub-District Support (ISDS) and the Health Systems Trust. Julia has 27 years in the office/administration field. She has been with HST/ISDS for the same length of time as Peter Barron, as secretary and office manager for the Cape Town office. She has recently been appointed as the Administrative Officer for the HMIS project team in the HST.

Madibata comes with vast health information skills, and has been the head of Information Systems in Lesotho. She will be working on PMTCT research, STI surveillance and assisting with the Irish Aid project.

Marion Stevens- mstevens @ hst.org.za.
Project Manager: Treatment Monitor

Marion has worked both locally and internationally in the area of HIV/AIDS and women's health and HIV/AIDS for the past 15 years. She has participated and been responsible for a number of health policy initiatives including the 1994 Women's Health Policy conference which resulted in thirteen different policies. This was a participatory process and resulted in the formation of a number of networks and processes of which she has been a facultative partner. Most of this work has also been targeted at assisting and developing the health system in the areas of integration, health information systems and human resources. She has a background as a health worker, in medical anthropology and in public development management. Her technical skills include: health systems qualitative and quantitative research in planning, methodology design, implementation, analysis, monitoring and evaluation

Muzi Patrick Matse - muzi @ hst.org.za.

Muzi joined HST in June 2002 as a site facilitator for Mopani District in Limpopo Province. He holds a PhD from Cambridge University and has also trained in public health. He is currently doing his final year for Masters in Public Health with Wits University. Muzi was a Researcher/Lecturer at the School of Public Health, Wits University from 1998 to 2002. He was involved in consultancy work before joining HST.

Nomonde's skills include project management, policy formulation and strategic planning. She has previously been the Director of Primary Health Care Services in Mpumalanga Department of Health, where she was involved in developing management systems.Her qualifications include BA(Cur) BA(Cur)HonsM(Cur) and Diplomas in Psychiatric Nursing, Midwifery and Medical and Surgical Nursing. Nomonde has been the Personal Assistant to the special adviser to the Minister of Health Dr Zuma.

IT Support and Network Administration Officer

Quintin is a Network and Support Officer responsible for the IT support and training needs of HST staff. He has worked at Technikon Natal in their IT Support section, supporting about 1000 staff members. He has worked on most Microsoft platforms from MS Dos to Windows 2000 and has experience in most of the commonly used Office Suites and other software packages.

Rachel has been working in the Administration Section since 1996 as secretary to the Executive Director. She offers administration support to all the Programme Managers and also organises conferences and workshops. She has a diploma in Advanced Office Management.

Human Resources and Administration Manager

Ricardo provides strategic human resources and administrative services and gives leadership to HR & Admin team so that HST can fulfill its mission, i.e. the development of health systems. He has worked in various capacities in HR in business and in Higher Education and also lectured Human Resources and Employee Relations. Ricardo an Honours degree in Industrial Psychology, is a registered Psychometrist with the HPCSA and is an accredited Chartered HR Practitioner with the South African Board for Personnel Practice.

Director: HealthLink

Ronel has been with the HST since September 1999 first as cross-site facilitator for Health Information Systems and later as project manager for the Health Information and Monitoring and Evaluation projects. As from March 2007 she has taken up the position as Director for the Healthlink program in the HST. She has over 20 years experience in Public Health and Management. She has qualifications in Nursing and Health Management, Administration and Training.

Ronélle has been working for HST since July 2006. She is the Gauteng provincial facilitator in the National Health Management Information Systems Project. She has extensive experience in the District Health System and has been working in the Health and Management Information Systems field since 1992. Ronélle has qualifications in General Nursing, Psychiatry, Community Health, Administration and Education.

Rosheen is based in the Cape Town office. Her job is very diversified and she does something of everything concentrating on grants administration and office management. Her previous job was as Administrator for the School of Government Training Division, University of the Western Cape. Rosheen has a secretarial diploma. At present she is busy studying towards a Diploma in Business Administration and Management.

HMIS Facilitator

Ross joined HST in March 1998 as an ISDS facilitator in the Mt Currie (sub)district of KwaZulu Natal where he gained valuable experience in district health system development, with a special interest in the role of communication in health delivery processes. After three years he joined the Research Section and participated in District Development monitoring projects and a Decentralisation collaborative initiative, together with financing and monitoring work in the field of Environmental Health. Ross is currently the Free State provincial facilitator in the Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) project. Ross has a Diploma in Forestry, a BSc (Economics and Geography) and a post graduate Diploma in Adult Education.

Sibongile has a Masters in Development Studies (University of Natal) and a teaching degree, B.Paed., from University of Durban Westville. She acquired her research experience by working for the School of Development Studies and Centre for HIV/AIDS Networking (HIVAN) at the University of Kwazulu-Natal in different research projects which were mainly on HIV/AIDS and health. She also worked on projects based in health facilities in Durban, McCord Hospital and King Edward Hospital. Prior her involvement in research, she worked as a teacher for more than 3 years in high schools around Durban and Ezakheni, Ladysmith.

Sithandiwe obtained her National Diploma and B.Tech Degree in Library and Information Studies at the Durban Institute of Technology. She has worked as a librarian and administrator of the Workers College Resource Centre and she has managed the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry special library whilst working as information specialist as well.

Siyabonga has an Honours Degree in Political Science (University of KwaZulu-Natal) and an undergraduate degree, B.Com. in Economics and Information Systems and Technology, from University of Durban Westville. He has been involved in a number of research projects and joint projects on HIV/AIDS while with Public Policy Partnership (PPP) at the University of Kwazulu-Natal.

Project Manager: Health Information Systems & Monitoring and Evaluation

Stiaan is the facilitator of the Atlantic Philanthropy project and is based in the Western Cape. He was part of Emergency Medical Service in the Northern Cape for ten years before joining the HISP team in 2002. Since then he gained valuable experience in district health information systems development working with organizations like UWC School of Public Health, Equity, Health Partners International and others. He has a National Diploma in General Management and a post graduate Diploma in Managing Health and Welfare. His strengths are database development (DHIS), Geographical Information Systems, material development and Health Management Information Systems with a special interest in Emergency Medical Services. He also worked part time in Nigeria, developing and implementing a Health Management Information System.

Thobile is a medical doctor with a postgraduate degree in Public Health (Community Pediatrics and Child Health, Wits Medical School). He also has a Post Graduate Specialist Degree in Family Medicine and a Post Graduate Diploma in Child Health from the College of Medicine of South Africa. He has more than 20 years experience working in primary health and public health environment in South Africa and more than 10 years experience working at senior management level providing strategic leadership.

Junior Researcher

Thokozani holds a Masters Degree in Sociology (UKZN). Prior to joining HST he worked as a part-time Researcher for the University Interdisciplinary Accident Research Centre (Uniarc) at UKZN. He is currently working on the Knowledge Management Project commissioned by the National Department of Health, whos main objective is to review health research studies conducted in South Africa since 1994. He is also collecting research studies to be uploaded into the National Department of Health Research Database as part of the strategic initiative to identify health research priority areas for further research, as well as assisting with the establishment of Provincial Health Research Committees (PHRCs).

Wanda joined HST in 2002 as a consultant to the Male Sexuality and ART Literacy projects. She is currently a Site Facilitator for the ART Literacy Project based in Mpumalanga Province. Prior to joining HST she had been a Provincial HIV and AIDS Coordinator in KZN and a part time Lecturer in the Durban-Umlazi Campus of the University of Zululand (Nursing Science Department). She holds Masters in Public Health and PHD (Public Health Nursing).
