DefinitionPercentage of member contributions that has been utilised for the payment of benefits claimed by members of medical schemes, as opposed to allocation of contributions for non-health benefits and the building of reserves.

    The claims ratio is expected to increase given that most schemes have already attained the prescribed level of reserves - the accumulation of the necessary reserves had caused the ratio to deteriorate over previous years.
