Monitoring access to HIV treatment and care.
The ARV Treatment Monitor is a newly established project within the Research Programme of the Health Systems Trust. The aim of the Treatment Monitor is to facilitate and support a set of research activities in South Africa, that will monitor access to HIV treatment and care as well as the impact that HIV has on health services across the country. Ultimately it aims to identify or share information on models of best practice and lessons learnt in order to stimulate and promote the ongoing improvement of effective and efficient HIV treatment and care and health services in general.
It is envisioned that the Treatment Monitor will provide a link between the monitoring of antiretroviral treatment, health systems infrastructure and quality of care by way of HSTs biannual National Primary Health Care and Facilities Survey. In addition to this, the Monitor intends to create a network between important role-players across the various health sectors and will disseminate relevant information obtained through meetings and workshops with key stakeholders. Dissemination of information will be done through HSTs publications and electronic communication systems. It is hoped that strong links and collaborative initiatives will emerge to share information, strengthen debate and enhance the process of policy
development.
The Treatment Monitor also aims to work closely with all stakeholders to identify gaps in health systems research, and to support the development of essential health systems research to strengthen the health system in providing comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care at all levels.
