Fedics launches menu to fight HIV/AIDS
2004-04-23

Catering group Fedics has entered the HIV/AIDS management arena, launching nutritionally enhanced menus and food products to boost immune systems among its clients. Research indicates that sound nutrition, although not a cure can maintain and improve the quality of life and health of HIV-positive people.

Catering group Fedics has entered the HIV/AIDS management arena, launching nutritionally enhanced menus and food products to boost immune systems among its clients. Research indicates that sound nutrition, although not a cure can maintain and improve the quality of life and health of HIV-positive people.

Taken with antiretroviral drugs, sound nutrition boosts the immune system. The move has seen Fedics re-engineer its clients' recipes and menus to address nutritional intake and ensure balanced diets. CEO Clive Smith said that although most companies had in-house HIV management programmes, few had considered the benefit of directly addressing the nutritional intake of employees infected with the virus. We want to focus on living with HIV, not dying of AIDS, he said.

Fedics group national HIV/AIDS manager Alan Brand is managing the project, bringing personal experience to the debate. Brand, who was diagnosed HIV positive in 1997 and developed AIDS five years ago, believes HIV wellness goes beyond the use of antiretrovirals. (Source: Nicola Jenvey: Business Day, 19 April 2004)
