The House of Traditional Leaders is meeting in Cape Town today to discuss its support for legislation that will regulate initiation schools and circumcision. Elements of the legislation will be discussed at a two-day national conference planned for next week in Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, a traditional surgeon from Mount Frere will appear in court today following the number botched circumcisions. If he is found guilty, he could face a fine of up to R10 000 or ten years in jail. A health department spokesperson says 10 of the boys, who are all under the age of 18, are in a critical condition.
