The Childrens Institute (CI) is a policy research and advocacy institute based at the University of Cape Town. The mission of the Institute is to contribute to policies, laws and interventions that promote equity and realise the rights and improve the conditions of all children in South Africa, through research, advocacy, education and technical support.

Health Programme Manager

The Childrens Institutes Health programme aims to promote and facilitate an appropriate evidence-based policy, programme and funding response for the promotion of childrens health through appropriate, equitable and accessible health services. The programmes response to date has largely focused on national level public health policy, laws, programming and implementation for children and focused on health service provisioning for children in the public sector.

We require a dynamic, forward-thinking individual to lead programme activities and staff within an academic environment. The candidate will plan, develop and manage the activities, staff and resources of the Health Programme of the Childrens Institute. This will include fund-raising, financial management, and co-ordination of relevant research.

Responsibilities:

  • overseeing all resources, projects and related activities of the health programme

  • providing strategic direction and support to programme staff and projects

  • initiating (or securing) and planning research and related child policy activities, in line with the Childrens Institute objectives and research criteria

  • placing and keeping issues related to health services for children on national & provincial policy and legislative agendas

  • advocating for changes in policy, assisting in the development of appropriate policies, and evaluating their implementation

  • developing funding proposals, sourcing and securing funding for activities and staff of the programme, managing the budget and finances, and accounting for expenditure

  • participating in the management team of the Institute.

Requirements:

  • basic degree in Health Sciences, with a postgraduate degree in Public Health (or an equivalent)

  • at least 5 years experience in working in the health sector

  • a specific interest in child health and public health is preferable

  • experience in the field of child health policy development and implementation would be beneficial

  • experience in Project Management is essential

  • excellent fundraising ability

  • good research and writing skills

  • good communication, networking, negotiation and interpersonal skills

  • computer literacy

  • valid drivers licence, with access to private vehicle

  • ability to travel.

HIV Programme Manager

The Childrens Institutes HIV/AIDS programme aims to promote and facilitate an appropriate policy, programme and funding response to children in the context of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. The programmes research projects to date have focused largely on developing an understanding of the social impact of the AIDS pandemic on children and their families, and on approaches to its mitigation.

The programme is fast-growing, with a dedicated multidisciplinary team of 6 staff members, and requires a dynamic forward-thinking individual to lead programme activities and staff within an academic environment. You will plan, develop and manage the activities, staff and resources of the HIV/AIDS Programme of the Childrens Institute. This will include fund-raising, financial management, and co-ordination of relevant research.

Responsibilities:

  • M.Social Sciences or equivalent academic qualification

  • at least 5 years experience in working in the relevant sectors such as social / policy or equivalent sector

  • a sound understanding of childrens issues with specific expertise in the field of HIV

  • experience in the field of child policy development would be beneficial

  • experience in Project Management is essential

  • excellent fundraising ability

  • good research and writing skills

  • good communication, networking, negotiation and interpersonal skills

  • computer literacy

  • valid drivers licence with access to private vehicle

  • ability to travel.

The annual packages for these contract positions (with the possibility of renewal) is dependent on qualifications and experience.
