Addictive drugs are being made in SA - UN
Independent Online 2007-03-01
Increasing amounts of the drugs commonly known as tik and ice are being manufactured in South Africa, according to a United Nations report, the SABC reported on Wednesday.
The United Nations office on Drugs and Crime's 2006 report was released in Pretoria on Wednesday.
Dr Jonathan Lucas of the UN's office on Drugs and Crime said the rise in the manufacture, sale and use of these methamphetamine-based drugs was the result of the chemical used to make them being easily available.
According to the report, Africa continued to be exploited by traffickers because of a lack of control mechanisms in most countries on the continent.
Cocaine, heroin, cannabis and mandrax also continued to be easily available in many African countries, the report said. - Sapa
