Project Administrator

The Child, Youth, Family and Social Development Programme is looking for a suitably qualified person to work within one of its research projects, called Going to Scale. Going to Scale is a large scale longitudinal study which aims to generate scientific and policy relevant knowledge about how South Africa's children are being affected by the crises of HIV/AIDS and household poverty. Employees will be based at a research site in Sweetwaters, just outside Pietermaritzburg.


The successful candidate will work with the administration team in undertaking project administration, financial and office duties. The position will be offered on an 18-month contract.

Key responsibilities:

  • Providing administrative and logistics support to project staff
  • Arranging meetings, teleconferences, seminars and workshops
  • Recording and drafting of minutes of meetings
  • Managing day to day project finances
  • Asset management and control, including the project vehicles
  • Ordering, purchasing and control of project supplies
  • Management of the Project Director&rsquos diary
  • Processing of project staff travel and subsistence claims
  • Liaising with local and international stakeholders
  • Setting up and coordinating visitors&rsquo programmes
  • Assisting with switchboard, incoming and outgoing mail and faxes.

Key Requirements:

  • Matric plus relevant Degree and/or Diploma
  • At least 2 year&rsquos relevant experience
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to communicate clearly and confidently
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and to solve problems
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to travel as and when required (e.g. Pietermaritzburg, Durban, Cape Town and Pretoria)
  • A valid driver&rsquos licence will be preferable.

The HSRC offers market-related packages, dependent on qualifications and experience. The contract may be extended depending on performance and the availability of donor funding.
