More funds needed to fight HIV/AIDS
Manelisi Dubase, SABCnews.com 2008-06-27
AIDS activists say the fight against HIV/AIDS is being impeded by a shortage of health workers and limited funds. Hundreds of them marched to Capitol Hill to demand more money to fund HIV/AIDS projects.
Just five weeks before the International AIDS Conference starts in Mexico at the beginning of August, lobbying for funds is beginning to intensify in the US and around the world. Activists are arguing that complacency among donors and politicians might reverse the gains that have been achieved in fighting this scourge.
US Senators recently agreed to increase US funding to fight AIDS. New legislation would authorise 50 billion over the next five years to battle diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis throughout the world. AIDS activists are worried that natural disasters and political conflicts are diverting the world's attention from this scourge. They hope to keep it on the global agenda until enough resources are secured, to adequately deal with it.
