District Health Barometer Launch at HISA 2009
HST 2009-05-28
The 2007/8 edition of the District Health Barometer 2007/08 will be launched on the 6th of July 2009 at Emperors Palace, Gauteng at the cocktail evening for the opening of the HISA conference.
The vision of the District Health Barometer project is to assist in the transformation of the culture and use of health information in the public health sector in South Africa. It provides a product in which key health statistics are easily understood and used for decision making.
Its goals are to improve the quality and transparency of health systems information in South Africa, to house an authoritative and accurate database of key health and health-related indicators and to produce an annual publication of health sector performance data covering several years, therefore enabling ongoing monitoring and evaluation.
In this 4th edition, the District Health Barometer report provides valuable additions to what has been made available in the preceding three years. These include:
- graphic illustrations of trend data of over 30 health and health-related indicators over a five to eight year timeframe thus allowing for a clearer picture of disease progression and service provision
- deprivation indices calculated to sub-district level, which provide insight into the variation of deprivation and need within a district, as well as a three year trend of the index at district level
- TB case load and new smear positive incidence by district to augment the existing TB indicators (TB cure rate and smear positive conversion rate)
- Measles immunisation coverage and drop out rate to provide a wider picture of the provision of child health care services.
The District Health Barometer 2007/08 is funded by the Atlantic Philanthropies and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
