The National Progressive Primary Health Care Network (NPPHCN) is a national non-government health advocacy organisation promoting collaboration, participatory research and policy formulation, appropriate training and organisational development. Membership of the Network is comprised of health and development programmes, projects, organisations and concerned individuals operating throughout South Africa. The Network has no party political or religious affiliations, but affirms values and approaches which recognise universal human rights and are supportive of the promotion of comprehensive, equitable and accessible health for all. The Network originated in April 1987 out of a need for a national network to promote Primary Health Care (PHC) and to develop a national PHC strategy for South Africa.
NPPHCN has since its inception been developing groups and individuals with the necessary skills and experience in PHC and community involvement to become skilled health workers. As one of the largest NGO health organisations which has credibility with people at a grass-roots level, NPPHCN is able to facilitate and help direct the major changes required to initiate an effective PHC service. The Network runs various programmes which build the capacity of provinces to support and develop primary health care programmes that assist in the overall development of the province. National programmes are tailored to provincial and regional needs.
