| Summary |
This CARE report provides a picture of the state of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in South Africa by documenting indicators of prevention and treatment. It details the potential impact of anti-retroviral therapy (ART), HIV incidence by demographic group, HIV prevalence based on sex and age, and prevention, treatment and mortality indicators. The report also projects the number of HIV positive people, people with AIDS-related sickness, AIDS-related deaths, and the number of maternal orphans from 1990 to 2015. |
| More Details |
The report finds that five million South Africans are HIV positive out of a total population of forty-six million, giving a prevalence rate of 11 %. Compared with previous models, the impact of HIV/AIDS has been revised downwards with improved epidemiological data. The report also suggests that ART
could reduce the number of AIDS deaths per year. Other findings highlight: increased distribution of male condoms, an increased number of facilities offering prevention of mother-to-child treatment programmes, and a falling population growth rate. The report emphasises the need to strengthen efforts to respond to this epidemic and the critical need to target young people if the epidemic is
to be slowed down in the future. |
