| Summary |
In South Africa, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a major public health problem. They are among the top five reasons for presentation at health services, and it is estimated that there is an annual STD incidence of 11% in South African adults. STDs play a major role in facilitating HIV transmission. The prevention and control of STD in this region is therefore a public health priority, and offers a practical approach to stemming the progression of the HIV epidemic. |
